The larger brother of the English Cocker Spaniel, the Springer is a lively, active and affectionate pedigree gundog. They derived their name from the role they played in the field, where dogs would flush game off the ground so it would "spring" into the air. Renowned for their stamina, the Springer Spaniel will work tirelessly all day in all conditions before settling down at home with the family after a good day in the great outdoors.
The Springer is renowned for their cheerful nature, something that has endeared the breed to many dog owners the world over. They are the perfect family dog because they are so well behaved and kind around kids. The breed was given an official status in 1902 and was given the name Springer in 1900 before which they were known as Norfolk Spaniels.
It is thought that all Spaniels can trace their origins back to Spain and that these dogs were introduced to other parts of Europe by the Romans. However, it was not until the 1800s that the English Springer Spaniel appeared on the scene being bred in Shropshire by the Boughey family. At the time, these dogs were more like Clumber Spaniels, but then in 1903 the breed was officially recognised in its own right by the Kennel Club before first appearing in the show ring.
It was after the First World War that the breed really came into its own in modern times with many true and good lines appearing on the scene. Breed clubs were set up all over the country ensuring the wonderful lines of the Springer Spaniel were kept as pure as possible. Today, the popularity of the breed continues with Springer Spaniels remaining a popular choice both as family pets and working dogs here in the UK and elsewhere in the world.
